In Case of Emergency…

Feb 27, 2018, 12:39 PM

Visit the new Brownell Emergency Center.  Yesterday, UnityPoint Health® – Grinnell Regional Medical Center opened its newly renovated emergency department. The Brownell Emergency Center is located on the second floor of the main hospital facility, up the ramp off of Third Avenue.

While the renovation itself began during the summer of 2017, the emergency department renovation has been 20+ years in the making, beginning with a capital improvements plan GRMC started in 1995. GRMC has updated equipment and services over the years as needed, but in keeping with the medical center’s mission to provide the most advanced healthcare in our area, a complete modernization of the space was necessary.

An open house was held on Wednesday, Feb. 21, to show community members the new space. The ER now has four private patient rooms and two trauma bays with expandable space, should a large emergency require more room. These trauma rooms have movable booms that contain all equipment necessary to care for a patient in critical condition, all within staff’s reach for ease of access.

The space also features a central nurses’ station and nurse call system provide staff with more efficient supervision of patients. New monitoring and vitals equipment have been fitted in each room. This central monitoring will offer patient privacy while giving staff constant feedback through vital signs and ECG strips.

“We welcomed hundreds of donors and local residents to our open house on Wednesday. Now we are ready to care for individuals’ needs in the modern facility,” says Doris Rindels, GRMC’s interim CEO. “The exceptional space now matches the experienced and talented staff that provides emergency care to all who enter our doors.”
