UnityPoint Health® - Grinnell Regional Medical Center is glad to help spread the word about Casting for Recovery (CfR) in Iowa. The mission of CfR is to enhance quality of life of women with breast cancer through a unique program that combines breast cancer education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. CfR’s retreats are open to breast cancer survivors of all ages, in all stages of treatment and recovery and are completely free to participants.
Their concept is unique—on a physical level, the rhythmic motion of fly casting can be good therapy for the upper body as a way to encourage increased mobility for women who have had surgery or radiation as part of their breast cancer treatment. Emotionally, women are given the opportunity to experience this activity in a safe environment amongst a supportive group of peers. At least one medical professional, one psychosocial counselor and four fly fishing instructors trained specifically for CfR staff each retreat.
Fourteen participants are randomly selected to benefit from a two-and-a-half day retreat at no cost. One in eight women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. The 2018 CfR in Iowa retreat will be held October 19-21 at Ewalu’s Stone Retreat Center, Strawberry Point, IA. The deadline to apply for a chance to participate in the retreat is August 10. To apply, complete an online application at www.castingforrecovery.org.
From prior year attendees, 99 percent felt a connection with fellow participants, 100 percent received new ideas or resources to improve their quality of life and 70 percent of retreat attendees had never been to a support group prior to CfR.
