Excelling in Quality
Grinnell Regional Medical Center was selected to participate in a national study that examines how changes in communication style and teamwork can improve patient safety.
TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based teamwork system designed to improve patient outcomes by enhancing communication and teamwork skills among healthcare professionals. It was developed by the Department of Defense (DoD) Patient Safety Program, in collaboration with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
During the two-year project, reviewers at GRMC observed, measured, evaluated, and documented findings about the hospital’s implementation of TeamSTEPPS. The evaluation examined how trainees learn, retain, and sustain enhanced communication techniques and behaviors.
TeamSTEPPS has now rolled out into all GRMC patient care departments. The results show improvement in patient safety and a reduction of miscommunication.
